Gavin & Jean Stork, the founders of Nwanedi Estate, having originally married in the Nwanedi Game Reserve, were inspired by the natural and wild beauty of the region. In retirement this exquisite African perfection is the daily motivation to continue producing wines that will grace any lifestyle and never disappoint.

With a life-threatening passion for trains, yes trains, whether model, garden or proto-typical steam trains, the property was purchased solely with the intention of retirement and building a model steam railway. In 1996, the quest was to find a suitable property of 5ha for the project. However, the Storks could not pass by the derelict site with the most stunning setting and view.

In reality, 31ha could not be considered a retirement home, but a farm, hence guidance was sought from local agriculture professionals, following tests, advice was that the piece of land was the finest in Paarl, and would be wasted unless the most noble of red wine grapes was established. Sparing nothing, consultants were appointed and the owners were did as they were told!

Initially selling only the grapes, the circumstances of the industry at the time forced the estate into making wine. The first vintage was 2005.
Being very eco-conscious, Jean & Gavin are emphatic regarding any aditives etc., including sulphurs, which could intefere with the free organic development of the natural wine process. This is a benchmark that is not negotiatable.

Having spent many years faced with the challenge of manufacturing the finest products possible, retiring in the wine industry has been no exception. In accepting the challenge that one person's favourite wine is another person's distaste, producing wines that will never disappoint is the ultimate challenge.
